πŸ“ƒ Context

This project began with my goal to apply new digital technology to enhance an existing digital product. I looked at different industries to find a gap that I could potentially bridge with innovation. I researched various sectors, from technology to healthcare, and from retail to finance. I ended up choosing a sector that’s often overlooked in terms of technological advancements: Journalism

I came across CBC’s annual report and found a problem that I could solve while meeting their business needs.

🚩 The Problem

Digital engagement on the CBC platform has only partially met the annual target. This is due to intense competition in the digital space, contributing to lower-than-anticipated user engagement.

How might we increase user engagement on the CBC platform?

πŸ“ Problem Statement

πŸ” Research

Technology is reshaping content interaction at a very fast rate and companies are adapting to keep it engaging.

Studies indicate active user participation is key to boosting platform engagement. Since news reading is a passive activity, I explored ways to make it active to make it an engaging experience. Here are some ideas I came up with based on current most engaging platforms.

❗️ Possible solutions

Gamifying News Reading

Introducing game-like elements such as identifying key information within articles or completing certain reading challenges for a reward.

News Scrolling Feed

Much like social media platforms, it would promote continuous engagement and personalization based on user preferences.

AR News Reading

Turn passive users into active users by letting users scan their surroundings to find the latest events and news.

80%

brands implementing AR say it helps boost performance metrics and acquire new customers.

I chose AR news reading to turn passive observers into active participants.

AR makes news consumption more immersive and interactive, offering a more engaging experience than traditional methods.

Here’s the final solution, CBC app with an AR Feature allowing users to scan their surroundings to see news of that area

Solution Demo

This is a personal project to improve my problem-solving and design skills. There are no metrics or outcomes beyond my personal growth. I focused on finding ways to increase user engagement by leveraging technology while keeping up with market trends to enhance the way people read news.
